Beginner to GUITARIST Series: LESSON 2 (moving between chords, fixing strumming hand, new song!)
Did you succeed with last weeks songs? Are you reconsidering it all? Stick with it; this is the worst you will ever be at guitar playing again. Uphill from here!
Welcome to the Beginner to Guitarist Series. In this series of free lessons, I will walk you through from your first day of playing (or not playing) guitar, to the point where you can:
- Play 75-90% of songs that you enjoy or typically listen to (note: unless you are a Polyphia fan!)
- Self-teach and continue to progress into expert status
- Play along to melodies in songs that you hear in everyday life, and figure out chord progressions by ear
I will be teaching you skills through a list of songs that are enjoyable, relevant, and popular, so that you can enjoy listening to yourself play from a very early point in your learning!
In this week's lesson, I teach you the following skills and concepts:
- switching between chords
- Look for shared notes or finger positions between chords
- Fixate on how you’re getting from one chord to another (some are much easier than others)
- Getting away with it: avoiding playing a note until your hand has caught up to the rest of the chord (guitarists do this all the time)
- Arpeggiating instead of strumming: benefit of having a few extra milliseconds
Right hand:
- Relax relax relax! You’re too tense! (probably)
- Strum from your elbow and wrist, not just your elbow, and not just your wrist
- If it feels goofy, it probably is goofy
- Play in front of a mirror, and then watch guitarists play. Find a guitarist in the genre you like, and literally try to mimic them
- Emphasise the parts of the chord that mean the most to your ears: the root note (bass note), the melodic/vocal notes (highest notes)

- Hard chords: open B7, A major, A7
- Easier chord: D chord
- Embellishing a d chord: you’ll hear this in SO many guitar songs
